• How it Works: The HRV pulls stale air and moisture out of your apartment (usually from the kitchen and bathroom) and replaces it with fresh, filtered air from the outside.
• The Spring Advantage: During winter, your HRV worked hard to keep humidity levels balanced and prevent window condensation. In the spring, it helps flush out that "winter staleness" without the energy loss associated with leaving every window wide open for hours.

The Importance of Clear Vents

During your spring cleaning routine, don't forget to look at your floor and ceiling vents. Airflow is the key to both air quality and efficiency.

• Clear the Path: Over the winter, furniture or long curtains may have migrated in front of your baseboard heaters or air vents. Ensure there is at least a six-inch clearance around all vents. Blocked vents force your HVAC system to work harder, increasing your costs and reducing the air quality in that room.
• Dust and Debris: Use the brush attachment on your vacuum to clear any dust that has settled on the vent grates. This prevents allergens from being recirculated through your suite as the fan runs.

How to Properly "Air Out" Your Suite

While our ventilation systems are excellent, nothing beats the feeling of a spring breeze. However, there is a right way to air out a modern apartment:

• Cross-Ventilation: Instead of opening every window a tiny bit, try opening two windows on opposite sides of your suite for 15 minutes. This creates a "cross-breeze" that flushes out the air much more effectively than a single open window.

• The Kitchen Hack: Whenever you are cooking—even if it's just boiling water—turn on your range hood fan. This removes moisture and cooking particulates at the source, preventing them from lingering in your upholstery or carpets.
