One of the most common frustrations renters have is feeling like they can't make a space their own. The walls stare back blank, you're not sure what's allowed, and the last thing you want is to lose your deposit over a few nail holes.

The good news: there are more options than ever for making a rental feel like home — without leaving a mark.

Know What Your Lease Actually Says

Before anything else, it's worth reading your lease to understand what's permitted. Many leases prohibit large nail holes or permanent modifications, but allow for small picture hooks or removable adhesive products. If you're not sure, ask — most property managers would rather clarify upfront than deal with it at move-out.

At Northtowne, our team is always happy to answer questions about what's permitted in your suite.

Removable Adhesive Strips and Hooks

Command Strips and similar adhesive products have improved enormously over the past few years. Used correctly — on a clean, dry surface, with the right weight rating — they hold securely and remove cleanly without damaging paint.

They work well for:

  • Lightweight frames and art prints
  • Small mirrors
  • Hooks for bags, keys, and light jackets near the entrance
  • Floating shelves (lighter-duty versions)

The key is following the weight limits and removal instructions carefully. Overloading an adhesive hook or pulling it straight off the wall instead of slowly stretching the tab is where things go wrong.

Lean, Don't Hang

Not everything needs to be mounted. Leaning large pieces against the wall — an oversized mirror, a framed print, a decorative ladder — is a legitimate design choice that works especially well in open-concept spaces. It also makes rearranging easy when you want a change.

A large leaned mirror in a living or bedroom corner reflects light, makes the room feel bigger, and requires zero wall contact.

Use Furniture to Anchor the Room

In a well-designed suite, the furniture itself does most of the decorating work. A few principles that make a big difference:

  • Area rugs define zones. In an open-concept layout, a rug under the sofa and coffee table creates a living area without touching a single wall. It also adds warmth and texture that bare floors don't have.
  • Bookshelves and floor lamps fill vertical space. Instead of mounting shelves, a freestanding bookshelf brings storage and visual interest to a wall without attaching to it.
  • Curtains hung at ceiling height (using a tension rod or removable hooks) draw the eye upward and make ceilings feel higher — a particularly effective trick in suites that already have generous ceiling heights.

Plants Add Life Without Permanence

A few well-placed plants transform how a space feels — they add colour, texture, and something living without a single mark on the wall. Floor plants in corners (fiddle leaf figs, snake plants, pothos on a stand) work beautifully in open-concept rooms. Smaller plants on windowsills or shelves fill gaps without clutter.

If you're not confident with plants, start with something low-maintenance: snake plants and pothos survive almost anything and still look great.

Temporary Wallpaper and Peel-and-Stick Panels

Peel-and-stick wallpaper has become genuinely good. It's available in a wide range of patterns and textures, goes up in an afternoon, and removes cleanly when you move. A single accent wall in a bedroom or behind open shelving in the kitchen can completely change the feel of a room.

Test a small corner first to make sure it removes cleanly from your specific wall surface before committing to a full wall.

Make the Most of Your Suite's Existing Character

Modern suites — particularly open-concept designs with high ceilings and large windows — already have strong bones. Sometimes the best decorating approach is working with what's there rather than trying to cover it: let the natural light be the feature, keep surfaces clean and uncluttered, and add a few intentional pieces rather than filling every wall.

A suite that feels spacious and light is often decorated with restraint, not volume.
